What is Adipic Acid
Adipic acid is one of the most widely used dicarboxylic acids in the chemical industry, especially in the production of nylon-based materials. Approximately 90% of adipic acid is used for the production of nylon 6.6 by polycondensation with hexamethylenediamine. Nylon produced from adipic acid has a protein-like molecular structure, which makes it strong, flexible and highly durable. For this reason, adipic acid is a key raw material in the manufacturing of industrial fibers, plastics and performance materials.
The nylon 6.6 polymer obtained from adipic acid is commonly used in carpet fibers (felts), automobile tire cords, clothing fabrics, textile applications and engineering plastics. Thanks to its durability and resistance, adipic acid-based nylon is especially preferred in high mechanical strength applications.
Beyond nylon production, adipic acid plays a significant role in the plasticizer industry. It is used in the formulation of plasticizers to increase flexibility and softness in PVC and unsaturated polyester resins. Additionally, adipic acid is used in the production of lubricants, hydraulic fluids and synthetic oils due to its high purity and chemical stability.

Product Description
Another growing area where adipic acid is highly valuable is the polyurethane sector. Adipic acid is used in the synthesis of polyester polyols, which are essential raw materials for flexible and rigid polyurethane foams, elastomers, adhesives, insulation materials and coating systems. Technical-grade adipic acid is also suitable for wire coatings, alkyd resins, wet-strength paper resins and industrial adhesives.
In polyurethane systems, adipic acid-derived polyester polyols offer improved mechanical resistance, elasticity and hydrolysis stability. Therefore, adipic acid is a preferred raw material in shoe sole systems, insulation foams, automotive parts and flexible foam applications.
To summarize, adipic acid stands out as a versatile, high-performance industrial chemical, essential in nylon production, polyurethane polyols, plasticizers, elastomers and synthetic lubricants. Its ability to add strength, flexibility and durability makes it indispensable for modern materials and polymer technologies.
