What Is Fire-Resistant Insulation?

Fire-resistant insulation is an insulation material system that withstands high temperatures and flame exposure, provides thermal and acoustic insulation, and meets safety standards in industrial facilities. For these systems to be used safely in building construction, their fire behavior must be tested and documented against internationally recognized standards — ASTM E84 in North America and EN 13501-1 in Europe. Pluskim's polyurethane-based fire-resistant insulation raw materials are manufactured for the B2B supply chain covering pipelines, sandwich panels, cold storage facilities, and industrial plant insulation.

Closed-cell polyurethane structure forms a layer resistant to high heat and flame exposure.

The closed-cell structure delivers a low thermal conductivity coefficient, improving energy efficiency while minimizing heat loss.

ASTM E84 and EN 13501-1 Standards

The correct standard for testing a polyurethane system depends on which market it will be sold in: ASTM E84 is the reference in the US and North America, while EN 13501-1 is the reference in Europe. In Turkey, the European standard is used as the reference under TS EN 13501-1.

In the "Steiner Tunnel" test, the material is mounted on the ceiling of a tunnel and exposed to a controlled flame for 10 minutes. The Flame Spread Index (FSI) and Smoke Developed Index (SDI) are measured, and materials are classified as Class A (FSI 0-25, best performance), Class B, or Class C. It is the reference test method for interior surface finishes, acoustic foams, and spray polyurethane foam (SPF) insulation.

Also known as the Euroclass system, it classifies materials into seven main classes from A1 (non-combustible) to F. It is further evaluated with smoke production (s1-s3) and flaming droplets/particles (d0-d2) sub-criteria — for example, "B-s1,d0" describes a Class B product with low smoke and no droplets. PU/PIR foam cores used in sandwich panels and spray polyurethane systems receive CE marking under this standard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fire-resistant insulation is widely used in construction, industrial pipelines, sandwich panel manufacturing, cold storage facilities, and heating & cooling systems.

Fire-resistant insulation systems are formulated to provide additional resistance to high temperatures and flame exposure, aiming to meet industrial safety and regulatory requirements.

ASTM E84 is a test method used in North America that measures flame spread and smoke density; EN 13501-1 is the Euroclass system used in Europe (and as TS EN 13501-1 in Turkey), classifying materials from A1 to F.
